From Dark and Darker Wiki
Gear Score is currently up to date for: Patch:6.6#Patch 6$green
Description
Each item in your team's inventory is worth a particular Gear Score value. The average Gear Score across your whole team is then used to place you into 1 of 3 brackets used for Match Making.
Items in your inventory that aren't equipped also contribute to this Gear Score, even excess consumables.
Item's Gear Score
Different Items provide different Gear Scores.
Note: Stacks of items count gear score for each item in the stack. For example, a stack of 3x Poor Potions will contribute 3x3=9 gear score.

Craftables/Exceptions
--NOTE-- The new patterns are still being researched! In the mean time, all items that don't fit the current patterns are listed below.
The following are exceptions to the above mentioned rules. Not all craftables are exceptions. They are only exceptions if listed below.
If an item is not listed below it follows the above Gear Score conventions.
Misc
Misc items do not have any Gear score.
Example Misc Items:
Misc are any items that cannot be equipped by anyone such as Coin Purses, Arrows, Bolts, Treasure, Hunting Loots, etc.
Brackets
Ironmace can change this very easily due to matchmaking being server sided , so this information can easily get out of date.
Currently there appear to be 2 brackets.
Those brackets are:
- Low Gear Bracket(0-299)
- High Gear Bracket 300+
Game will take into consideration total gear score of all members in the party and then it will average it out.
The max party size does not matter when calculating your party's gear score.
Averaging out Example and Edge cases
Example 1 - Party of 1 in Duos
Player 1 has 350 Gear Score. They are loading into Duos Ice Caves. Their party's gear score will be (350)/1 = 350 Gear Score.
They will be placed into the High Gear Bracket despite playing solo in a duos lobby.
Example 2 - Party of 2 in Trios
Player 1 has 200 Gear Score, Player 2 has 500 Gear Score. They are loading into Trios Crypts. Their party's gear score will be (200 + 500)/2 = 350 Gear Score.
They will be placed into the High Gear Bracket despite only having 2 members in the party.
Example 3 - Party of 3 in Trios
Player 1 has 897 Gear Score, Player 2 has 0 Gear Score, Player 3 has 0 Gear Score. They are loading into Trios Crypts. Their party's gear score will be (897 + 0 + 0)/3 = 299 Gear Score.
This party will be placed in the Low Gear Bracket despite one player having over 299 Gear Score
