From Dark and Darker Wiki
Gear Score is currently up to date for: Patch:6.6#Patch 6$orange
Description
Each item in your team's inventory is worth a particular Gear Score value. The average Gear Score across your whole team is then used to place you into 1 of 3 brackets used for Match Making.
Items in your inventory that aren't equipped also contribute to this Gear Score, even excess consumables.
Item's Gear Score
Different Items provide different Gear Scores.
Note: Stacks of items count gear score for each item in the stack. For example, a stack of 3x Poor Potions will contribute 3x3=9 gear score.

Misc
Misc items do not have any Gear score.
Example Misc Items:
Misc are any items that cannot be equipped by anyone such as Coin Purses, Arrows, Bolts, Treasure, Hunting Loots, etc.
Brackets
Ironmace can change this very easily due to matchmaking being server sided , so this information can easily get out of date. This information was gathered through manual testing.
Currently there appear to be 3 brackets.
Those brackets are:
- Low Gear Bracket(0-199)
- Medium Gear Bracket 200-399
- High Gear Bracket 400+
Game will take into consideration total gear score of all members in the party and then it will average it out.
The max party size does not matter when calculating your party's gear score.
A good and easy to use gear score calculation website
Averaging out Example and Edge cases
Example 1 - Party of 1 in Duos
Player 1 has 250 Gear Score. They are loading into Duos Ice Caves. Their party's gear score will be (200)/1 = 200 Gear Score.
They will be placed into the Medium Gear Bracket despite playing solo in a duos lobby.
Example 2 - Party of 2 in Trios
Player 1 has 200 Gear Score, Player 2 has 300 Gear Score. They are loading into Trios Crypts. Their party's gear score will be (200 + 300)/2 = 250 Gear Score.
They will be placed into the Medium Gear Bracket despite only having 2 members in the party.
Example 3 - Party of 3 in Trios
Player 1 has 597 Gear Score, Player 2 has 0 Gear Score, Player 3 has 0 Gear Score. They are loading into Trios Crypts. Their party's gear score will be (597 + 0 + 0)/3 = 199 Gear Score.
This party will be placed in the Low Gear Bracket despite one player having over 400 Gear Score
I built a gear score calculator. Do check it out and share feedback - https://gamingtoolsvault.com/gear-score-calculator-dark-and-darker
So are there still 3 brackets?
Low Gear Bracket(0-24) Moderate Gear Bracket(25-124) High Gear Bracket 125+
Cause this sentence here is confusing me: Brackets changed from 1-199, 200-399, 400+ to 1-299 and 300+
So if im in the moderate gear bracket the loot from gobbos and chest is also better no?
luck potion is an exception too. doesnt add gs
even no bracekts in normals atm? bruh..
If I was to say wear all green gear and get put into the moderate gear or higher bracket, will these brackets give us better loot drops in the dungeons. Like instead of a green, we have a better chance of getting a blue item? I'm hoping it does because the squire even says that because of it, you will be going into more dangerous dungeons. If they don't give us better loot then what is even the point of it?
above
The rule here states that if it is both, it follows the utility rule. I believe that lanterns still count as weapons for gear score though and would like to know if anyone knows as testing seems inconclusive
199 bracket setting is really good, make green equipment more useful, reduce the equipment gap between players, really make my game experience become very good, now 299 bracket and the launch of this system before the experience is no difference, this is really bad
I know it was stated the only changed score craftables are the ones listed, is this including gold gear?
?
What about the Pickaxe, haven't seen it mentioned anywhere and I don't know whether it doesn't matter towards GS or if it's technically utility.
I was curious if you knew where Throwables would be such as Franchisca's , or throwing knifes.
I can go in with no gear or just common gear from squire my gear score is less than 100 and still get medium to high bracket gear. THIS INFORMATION IS USLESS.
i created an mmr calculator: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Lm-0PYGB95FSY6gWl40-lUE7Vfg-3EZuZxDJsnwJ_wI/edit?usp=sharing
Feel free to reach out if u find any issues
