As of current patch (platelock meta), ranger in low armor rating and solos is perfectly fine. Especially because vig scaling's baseline was increased, thus buffing lower hp classes. He's not optimal but he's fun. Also dont rely on traps - its a gambit on if your opponent is dumb enough to fall for it. I use spear with field ration to be a shitty fighter with bow abilities, but really no ranger build is truly bad (even full mele with spear is not insane if you build physical res and run backstep + field ration).

Ranger is fun. Not optimal, but fun. Fighter doesnt have multishot, purge or true shot.
